Views of New Caledonia and portraits of Maori people of New Zealand. ca. 1874-1890.

Images include a photomontage by Josiah Martin of portraits of Maori people and a formal display of Maori weapons, fabrics and artifacts. The images of New Caledonia include two panoramic views of the capital Nouméa, probably by Allan Hughan. One striking photograph, also probably by Hughan, shows prison cells in the French-run convict prison on the Île Nour near Nouméa. Two portraits depict a mother and child, and a woman of Nouméa who posed in Hughan's studio wearing traditional dress.

7 photographic prints : albumen ; 17.5 x 22.5 cm. and smaller.
